Center for Advanced Study of Language Appoints Michael May Executive Director

COLLEGE PARK, Md – The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) has named Dr. Michael May its new executive director, effective January 2015. Dr. May succeeds Dr. Amy Weinberg, who will assume the role of CASL’s deputy director and director of research.

"Dr. May has an extraordinary understanding of the importance of language and language science to national security issues in both an operational and academic environment," said University of Maryland Vice President of Research and Chief Research Officer Dr. Patrick O’Shea.

For 22 years, Dr. May has served the FBI with distinction, most recently as the Senior National Intelligence Officer for Cyber, and the FBI Faculty Chair in the School of Science and Technology Intelligence at the National Intelligence University. He has had several external assignments within the U.S. Intelligence Community, and has served as adjunct faculty at Georgetown and Syracuse Universities. He has also served as an officer in the US Army. May holds a BA in Political Science and Psychology, and an MS in Counseling Psychology from the University of Vermont. In addition, he earned MA and PhD degrees in Political Science from Syracuse University.

As CASL’s executive director, Dr. Weinberg had been instrumental in molding the center’s strategic partnerships and research agenda.

"Amy Weinberg has done an amazing job in her dual roles as executive director and director for research for the past two years, and has built a strong foundation for the continued growth and excellence of CASL’s research,” O’Shea said.
