CHSE Researcher Recognized for a Lifetime of Achievement in Counseling Psychology

Professor Robert Lent, interim chair of the Department of Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education, was recognized this year for his many contributions to his field at the American Psychological Association convention in Washington, D.C. The Society of Counseling Psychology (APA Division 17) bestowed on Dr. Lent its most prestigious honor, the Leona Tyler Award for Lifetime Achievement in Counseling Psychology. The award plaque reads:

 "Robert W. Lent has made extraordinary achievements in three different areas: developing theory through prolific research; enhancing education and training through teaching, mentoring, writing, and editing; and advancing the profession through considerable service and in leadership roles. He is best known for his collaborative work in developing Social Cognitive Career Theory and Career Self-Efficacy Theory; bridging social and counseling / clinical psychology; and multiple editions of the Handbook of Counseling Psychology. His works have received global recognition and his research has influenced policy regarding STEM fields. He is one of the most frequently cited counseling psychology researchers outside of counseling psychology and he has worked strategically to promote career and educational development. Dr. Lent is among the most important scholarly voices of his generation in counseling psychology."

Dr. Robert Lent is Professor of Counseling Psychology and interim chair of the Department of Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education. His research examines applications of social cognitive theory to academic and career behavior, counselor training and development, psychological wellness, relationship adjustment processes, and promotion of health behaviors. Dr. Lent is co-editor, with Steven D. Brown, of the Handbook of Counseling Psychology (Wiley, 4th ed., 2008) as well as Career Development and Counseling: Putting Theory and Research to Work (Wiley, 2nd ed., 2013). He is associate editor of the Journal of Counseling Psychology and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Vocational Behavior.
