UMD and São Paulo Research Foundation Announce Opportunities for International Research Collaboration

The University of Maryland (UMD) and the São Paulo Research Foundation, Brazil (FAPESP) have announced opportunities for faculty to participate in Joint Research Workshops to explore research collaboration.

The two institutions established a partnership in March 2015 to foster scientific and technological cooperation between researchers from UMD and universities from the state of São Paulo, Brazil by funding Joint Research Workshops.

“We are excited to see these research collaborations develop between our faculty members and researchers in São Paulo,” said Vice President and Chief Research Officer Patrick O’Shea. “International partnerships like our collaboration with FAPESP help broaden the impact of our research and diversify and expand our capabilities.”

Joint Research Workshops provide travel funds for teams of researchers from both institutions, allowing face-to-face exploration of complementary research strengths and potential collaborations.

Specific proposal guidelines for the São Paulo Researchers in INTernational Collaboration (SPRINT) program can be found here.

The winners of the 2015 SPRINT competition were:

  • Wilfrid Schroeder, Department of Geographical Sciences, UMD, and Alberto Waingort Setzer, Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais / MCTI
Collaborative effort for biomass burning science exchange
