UMD Hosts 'Public Health Research@Maryland' Day

WHAT:

The first annual Public Health Research@Maryland day will take place on Thursday, April 4, 2013. The day is an MPowering the State event sponsored by the University of Maryland, College Park's School of Public Health and the University of Maryland, Baltimore's Department of Epidemiology and Public Health in the School of Medicine to showcase ongoing research and build new bridges to promote health in Maryland and beyond.

The day-long event will include a keynote lecture by renowned epidemiologist and bioterrorism expert D.A. Henderson, M.D., M.P.H., followed by a research showcase/poster session and networking panel roundtables led by public health experts.

WHO:

Faculty and student researchers from the University of Maryland, College Park and University of Maryland, Baltimore campuses, as well as community and state partners, will take part in activities that bring together diverse disciplines developing solutions for healthy lifestyles, families, communities and policies.

Dr. D.A. Henderson, epidemiologist and bioterrorism expert, will share lessons from the international effort to eradicate smallpox and how they can be applied to the fight against other infectious diseases. Over 30 leading experts will facilitate discussions on current and emerging public health issues including obesity prevention, STDs and HIV/AIDS, mental health and substance abuse, tobacco control, cancer control and prevention, and aging research.

BACKGROUND:

Under the MPowering the State initiative, plans are underway to create a collaborative school of public health that will build upon the complementary strengths of the existing accredited School of Public Health in College Park and the accredited master of public health degree program in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, School of Medicine in Baltimore. This inaugural event is a significant step in maximizing the impact of existing collaborations between the two campuses and building new bridges to promote health in Maryland and beyond.
