UMD Launches Pioneering New Resource to Support $550M Research Enterprise

The University of Maryland (UMD) has announced the launch of Integrated Research Resources on Campus, or IRRoC, a new website that provides a unified, central access point to connect UMD’s robust and diverse research community with data, resources, and services across campus. This pioneering initiative aligns with the university’s strategic goal of building a world-class infrastructure to support its $550 million research enterprise, providing comprehensive information and resources to help researchers manage and navigate the complete research cycle.

The website was launched through a cross-campus partnership between UMD’s Division of Research, Division of Information Technology, and University Libraries to create a new searchable database that integrates university research resources spanning departments, centers, colleges, divisions, and libraries, making this information easy to find and place in proposals.

“IRRoC will help our researchers quickly and easily access all of the resources they need, supporting our continued rise as one of the best public research institutions in the world,” said Vice President and Chief Research Officer Patrick O’Shea.

IRRoC offers a “one-stop shop” for identifying campus IT infrastructure, data management services, campus research facilities, and other resources available to researchers, offering templates and sample descriptions to include in proposals and letters. Resources on the site help researchers develop their ideas, write proposals, create budgets, manage their research awards, and follow compliance and reporting guidelines.

“We pride ourselves on making the best data and technologies available to our faculty researchers, and are pleased to be a part of the team responsible for delivering IRRoC to our campus community,” said Vice President and Chief Information Officer Eric Denna.

UMD fosters a culture of transformative innovation and cross-campus collaboration. IRRoC is a perfect example of this kind of collaborative effort, providing a holistic and accessible portal to connect researchers to the vast array of resources, technology, facilities, and expertise on the College Park campus.

“The foundation of our campus-wide partnership was essential to the success of the IRRoC project, and we were very glad to offer our University Libraries’ resources to this important initiative,” said Interim Dean of University Libraries Babak Hamidzadeh.

UMD is the state's flagship university and one of the nation's preeminent public research universities. UMD’s research enterprise secured a record $550 million annually in external research funding in 2015.
