UMD Named a Finalist for a 2015 Innovation & Economic Prosperity University Award

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland was named a finalist for a 2015 Innovation & Economic Prosperity (IEP) University Award by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU). UMD is a finalist for the Talent Award, which honors an institution with exemplary initiatives in education and workforce development.

The third annual APLU IEP Universities designation identifies institutions working to advance the economic well-being of their states, regions and the nation. Economic engagement efforts include universities working with public and private sector partners in their states and regions to support economic development through a variety of activities – innovation and entrepreneurship, technology transfer, talent and workforce development, and community development.

UMD was named a finalist for the Talent Award in part for its partnership with Northrup Grumman to create the Advanced Cybersecurity Experiences for Students (ACES), a program which helps to supply trained workers to serve the cyber community.

In addition, UMD announced earlier this year its plans for Greater College Park, an initiative which ties together the many efforts supporting the university’s goal of becoming a premier college town. It focuses on three inter-related components: 1) Dynamic academic spaces; 2) A vibrant downtown community; and 3) A public-private research hub that brings together businesses and the university’s academic community in the research park and innovation district.

“Public research universities have a core responsibility to take their wide array of expertise and put it to work in their region by helping to grow businesses, strengthen the economy, and advance society,” APLU President Peter McPherson said. “The six institutions that are finalists for the 2015 APLU Innovation & Economic Prosperity University Awards have all demonstrated a clear commitment to economic engagement and have followed through by delivering results. APLU applauds them and looks forward to sharing their good work with other institutions as a resource for all public research universities to expand their economic engagement activities and help grow their regional economies.”

In June, UMD was named to the 2015 class of Innovation & Economic Prosperity Universities by APLU. APLU honored UMD for its work with public and private sector partners throughout Maryland to support economic development through a variety of activities, including innovation and entrepreneurship, technology transfer, talent and workforce development, and community development.

The winners of the 2015 IEP University Awards will be announced on November 17 at APLU’s annual meeting in Indianapolis. For more information on the awards and finalists, visit the APLU website.
