University of Maryland Criminology Program Featured in Philadelphia News

A recent article in the Philadelphia News featured the University of Maryland’s Criminology program as one of the finest in the country. The U.S. News and World Report magazine ranked the University of Maryland as the nation’s number 1 criminology and criminal justice doctoral program, and it continues to be one of the highest ranking programs in this fast-growing field. The University also offers a master’s degree in criminal justice, which is in collaboration with the Nanjing Normal University of China. Internationally, this program is gaining attention and popularity due to a global interest in issues of justice.

The Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice (CCJS) at the University of Maryland was initiated in 1969 and since then has excelled at research and education in areas including crime and delinquency, law enforcement, juvenile justice, criminology, courts and corrections, and terrorism. The former chairwoman of the department, Sally Simpson, said that outstanding faculty is the biggest reason for the success of the program.

The criminology and criminal justice doctoral program at UMD takes a hands-on and collaborative approach.  Simpson says, “We bring in a lot of grant money and students get the opportunity to work on projects that are in areas of great interest.” The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) is an example of an opportunity for students in the criminology department and researchers to work together on current issues. The START Center is 1 of 12 U.S. Department of Homeland Security centers of excellence. START aims to develop a better understanding of the terrorist radicalization process and the evolution of terrorist groups and to strengthen the resilience of U.S. citizens in the face of terrorist threats.
