The largest transportation data archive in the world and how UMD researchers can leverage it


Michael PackIn this highly-visual presentation, Michael Pack will discuss the data analytics available in the world’s largest transportation data archive.  He will focus on transportation big-data tools and technologies available through the CATT Lab that can transform the way DOTs and Researchers conduct business.  He will also give a sneak peak of the latest big-data technologies being developed for the next generation of traffic operators and planners that leverage connected and autonomous vehicles technologies and people-movement analytics.

Michael Pack is the founder and director of the CATT Laboratory where he sets the strategic vision for his team of 100+ data scientists, software developers, systems integrators, and transportation professionals to make federal, state, and local transportation data easily accessible and usable by diverse user communities.  Through the development of innovative applications and data visualization tools, Michael’s team enables data sharing, informed decision-making, better response to emergencies, insight discovery, and increased productivity.
 
Mr. Pack has been honored at the Obama White House as a Champion of Change for his leadership in integrating vast amounts of data from around the country into the Regional Integrated Transportation Information System, for his performance management applications, and for his efforts in breaking down the barriers within agencies that prevent data from being leveraged to its fullest potential.   

Mr. Pack has previously worked at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Center for Transportation Analysis and the University of Virginia’s Smart Travel Laboratory.  He serves on the Performance Management Committee and is chair of the Visualization Committee at TRB.
