Nick Molden

Chief Executive Officer, Emissions Analytics Ltd

April 21st, 2021 noon to 1:00PM

How to electrify cars to achieve greatest carbon dioxide reduction

The talk will be centered around the following questions:

  • How good are full hybrid vehicles in real-world driving?
  • Can mild hybridisation help to a significant degree?
  • Are plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) a rapid and practical route to carbon dioxide reduction, or a risky diversion?
  • What does independent real-world testing tell us happens in practice, and how often do PHEVs get charged up?
  • Are the advantages of PHEVs correctly represented in manufacturer marketing?
  • Do full battery electric vehicles embody the preferable endgame?

A perspective based on real emissions measures will be given to enlighten one of the major challenges in transportation and climate change.

BIO

Nick founded Emissions Analytics in 2011 in order to understand real-world fuel economy and emissions from vehicles.  The concept was to find a way to characterise vehicles in a relatively short test, and be able to conduct a large number of comparable tests.  The resulting EQUA database is now a platform for analysing and modelling emissions performance, which covers the UK, Europe, USA and South Korea.

Nick is chairman of the European standardisation CEN Workshop 90 on collecting real driving emissions data, which has led to the publication of the AIR Index by the AIR Alliance, of which he is a co-founder.  He is also chairman of CEN Workshop 103 on standardising the collection of vehicle interior air quality data, with a focus on particle ingress and carbon dioxide build-up.

He is a specialist in data analytics, particularly in the automotive market, through his prior work at Oxford Indices Ltd, a data specialist, United Business plc and Haymarket Media Group.  Nick is a graduate of the University of Oxford, with an MA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and an Honorary Research Fellow at Imperial College London.
