New UMD Joint Public Health School Established Between College Park and Baltimore Campuses

The University of Maryland, College Park’s President Wallace Loh and the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s President Jay A. Perman announced a new, joint public health school between the two largest public research universities in Maryland. This joint public health school is part of the new MPowering the State initiative, offering more opportunities for students to research, study and work in public health at both campuses. The first master of public health students to receive degrees from the joint school will be in 2014. Currently, there are only three other collaborative public health schools in the U.S.

The School of Public Health in College Park has 2,200 students and there are 72 master’s students in the public health program within the School of Medicine at Baltimore. Options for smart classrooms and meeting rooms are being explored to increase interaction between the two campuses. Students will also be encouraged to take classes at both locations. The degree requirements will not change.

Faculty members at the College Park School of Public Health have expertise in social epidemiology, biostatics, social epidemiology, health education and other public health topics, while UMB’s strengths are in areas such as clinical research, global health, epidemiology and other subjects. Two professors from College Park have been given joint positions in Baltimore and College Park. This joint public health school signals the start of more anticipated collaboration between the two universities.
