UMD's Center for Advanced Study of Language Cited as a Critical DoD Program

Glenn Nordin, the Department of Defense Principal Foreign Language Advisor, recently recognized the University of Maryland's Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) as a critical Department of Defense program at a recent Senate hearing.

U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Subcommittee, held a conference to discuss the shortage of foreign language speakers in the government. Several witnesses were called upon to testify about the need for foreign language speakers in the government and the possible effects on national security. Topics discussed included providing incentives for foreign language study, recruiting personnel and improving educational programs. Nordin delivered his comments about CASL during the hearing.

UMD's CASL was founded in 2003 as a Department of Defense supported university affiliated research center (UARC) with a nationally recognized research staff. It is the first and only national resource dedicated to addressing the language needs of the Intelligence Community. The CASL represents a community-wide effort to provide the research neccessary for the expansion of language capabilities in the federal government
