University of Maryland Research Enterprise Records Highest Ever Annual Total in Research Funding

The University of Maryland research enterprise had a record-breaking year in FY2019, with a total of $570 million in research awards. This amount was the highest total ever recorded and an increase of ~$24 million over the previous fiscal year.

A number of factors contributed to this increase, including: partnerships with agencies, institutions, and corporations; strategic outreach; seed grant programs; proposal support; mentoring; licenses and new start-ups; and interdisciplinary collaborations.

"This achievement was made possible by the excellence of our faculty, staff, and students, and reinforces our reputation as a leading research university," said Vice President for Research Laurie Locascio. "These numbers also reflect the high quality research and innovation ecosystem we have established."

Among the record-breaking efforts: a five-year $175 million National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) cooperative funding agreement to the University of Maryland to support the new Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies, a national consortium of more than two dozen academic and nonprofit institutions.
