USA Today Names DC Among Best Technology Start-Up Towns

Washington, D.C. was ranked among the nation's best technology start-up towns, according to USA Today.

USA Today asked the National Venture Capital Association to rank the top ten cities for start-up companies. These rankings were to be based upon dollars invested in developing tech companies. San Francisco was ranked first. This area, including Silicon Valley, is generally considered to be the technology capital of the world. This is the home of seven of the top ten most visited websites, such as Facebook, Google and Yahoo. The cities of Boston and New York are the next ranked cities. However, due to the high cost of living in these areas, new cities are becoming popular locations for young technology companies to prosper. Following New York City is Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., San Diego, Chicago, Austin, Boulder/Denver and Seattle.

The University of Maryland’s proximity to Washington, D.C. provides students and staff many opportunities. AOL, LivingSocial, PopVox, TroopSwap, originated in the nation’s capital. D.C. is very popular for start-up companies and “every major organization and non-profit has a presence here, so it’s really attractive” says Zvi Band, who manages the Proudly Made in DC website directory of local start-ups.
