Year of Data Science Application for Funding

Most colleges and departments on our campus have devoted efforts to improve their faculty and students’ proficiency with data science including advances in data collection, organization, documentation, curation, manipulation, retrieval, analysis, and visualization.

These efforts have often been isolated and have not always been well-connected with the strong expertise in data science and related fields (such as statistics) on our campus. The Provost’s office will match, from one-time monies up to $100,000 per year for two years, the collective investment of funds from all of the colleges for activities that (i) strengthen data science collaborations across campus, (ii) improve UMD’s capabilities in data science research and education, and (iii) enhance UMD’s visibility in the broader community. The amount of support each activity receives will depend on the number and diversity of participants, the nature of the proposed activities, and length of activities.
