'All That Breathes,' A Documentary Film Featuring UMD's Sean Carroll as Executive Producer, Wins Sundance Prize

The documentary film focuses on two brothers in Delhi who devote their lives caring for injured wild birds

All That Breathes, a documentary film that features the University of Maryland's Sean B. Carroll as Executive Producer, was awarded the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival 2022. The film focuses on two brothers who have devoted their lives to caring for Delhi’s injured wild birds in India.

Dr. Carroll is the inaugural Andrew and Mary Balo and Nicholas and Susan Simon Endowed Chair of Biology at the University of Maryland and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator.

“This poetic film delivers an urgent political story while constructing a singular and loving portrait of protagonists resisting seemingly inevitable ecological disaster – with humorous touches punctuated by unsentimental depiction of the animal kingdom," said Juror Emilie Bujès. "For maintaining its suspenseful tension when portraying the interior struggles of its characters and the contradictions in spirituality and materialism they confront, we present the [World Cinema] Grand Jury Prize to All That Breathes.”

The film, directed by Shaunak Sen and starring Mohammad Saud and Nadeem Shehzad, has drawn glowing reviews from movie critics across the globe.
