FPE Executive Lecture Series: Steve Kerber, Underwriters Laboratories Steve Kerber ('05) TITLE: Finding a Voice for Fire Safety Progress ABSTRACT: This talk will explore Kerber's perspective on how fire protection engineers can find their voice for fire safety progress. He will share his journey and how he found his voice to impact the overall safety and effectiveness of fire service. Steve will draw many parallels between the fire service and FPE communities with examples of UMD alumni that have made a difference. Join the discussion and bring your perspective on how we can further achieve fire safety progress! BIO: Steve Kerber is the vice president of research for Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and director of the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute. He leads a fire safety research team dedicated to addressing the world's unresolved fire safety risks and emerging dangers to reduce death, injury and loss from fire. Kerber has led research in the areas of fire safety engineering, firefighter safety, fire forensics and fire science. He received his B.S. and M.S. in fire protection engineering from UMD and Ph.D. from Lund University in Sweden. Kerber is also a 13-year veteran of the fire service, with most of his service conducted at the College Park Fire Department in Maryland, where he served at ranks up through deputy chief. He has also been appointed the Fire Department of New York Honorary Battalion Chief and was named the 2014 International Society of Fire Service Instructors and Fire Engineering George D. Post Instructor of the Year. In 2019, Kerber was awarded the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs President's Award of Distinction and is a fellow of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers.
